Organized camping grounds with basic services should be earmarked in the city master plan to accommodate the immigrants coming into cities like Kochi in search of jobs or to set up a business. This will greatly help in preventing the squatter settlements likely to come up in future in the key city centers. Already the problem of slums is a difficult problem to tackle in the city centers.
Construction workers come to cities in large numbers but have no arrangement in place for shelter and sanitation facilities. As such they reside on or near the construction site in temporary huts without access to essential services. As per the contract/labor/Act, the contractor should be enabled to provide adequate shelter to the labor force when the principal employers are the government departments and public sector undertakings.
When considering the developments in Real Estate Kochi has a special place in the minds of the investors from not only the country, but also from abroad. Open lands in the key city centers are now witnessing increasing competition between the main business houses. Since the strategic location is very important for a business, some of the leading entrepreneurs and businessmen do not mind shelling out any amount of money to own properties in particular destinations. Thus the concept of camping grounds is fast becoming a pipe dream.
Marine Drive, the prominent locality in Kochi was an open camping ground just a few decades ago. Mostly used by political parties and other organizations for public meetings and exhibitions, this area was large enough to accommodate lakhs of people. The parking area was large enough to park hundred of cars and other vehicles. All that has changed now. With the onward march of the market forces, the valuable piece of property has been set apart for real estate development. Thus, a virtual concrete jungle has emerged in this hot destination.
